About Age Concern

  • Age Concern Bermuda was established in 1978, as the result of a Bermuda Government commissioned report that recommended that a group of individuals advise the Government on issues that affect the elderly, and that group be modeled after Age Concern in the United Kingdom.


    Today, Age Concern Bermuda is an independent, non-profit organization with an affiliate program of approximately 6000 persons over the age of 50 years old.

    Our programs consist of information, advice and referral services provided through our Call Centre, financial hardship fund support for groceries, prescription drugs, food and minor home repairs for qualifying affiliates. In addition, Age Concern affiliates have access to free information seminars, discounts and concessions from local businesses including but not limited to: legal assistance, successful ageing planning and home care support.

    Age Concern Bermuda is committed to take on a more dynamic advocacy approach to identify and bring awareness to the needs of the ageing population within our local community. 

  • Bermuda, as an international community of excellence, where optimal health and well-being; financial security; civil participation and dignity are equitably experienced by residents as they age.

  • The current ageing trend facing the globe is one that has no parallel in human history, and Bermuda is no different. By the year 2026, persons over the age of 65 years will represent 25 percent of the total population (Bermuda Census 2016)

    These changes are leading to a record-high old-age dependency ratio, which reflects the ability of the working population to support its older adults. By 2026, the old-age dependency ratio is expected to increase significantly, which combined with a relatively constant youth dependency ratio means that there will be over 60 older adults and youth for every 100 people of working age.

    The shift toward an older population is compounded by a trend toward earlier retirement. Of people over 65 in 1980, 50% of men and 25% of women were in the labour force. In 2000, the percentage of older adults in the labour force had declined to 34% of men and 17% of women.

Published and distributed information newsletter to all pensioners

Age Concern members were asked to participate in the first advisory committee for this education program.

In partnership with the Seniors’ Islanders Club, now an annual, widely celebrated week in the calendar year.

Advisory Committee members of the housing study were Age Concern directors and other community stakeholders.

The program provided seniors with a matching service for live-in companions. The program is now under the auspices of the National Office for Seniors and the Physically Challenged.
