Administrator-in-Training (AIT) Programme of Bermuda
Building the Next Generation of Long-Term Care Leaders
The Administrator-in-Training (AIT) Programme of Bermuda is a professional development and credentialing pathway designed to prepare current and aspiring Residential Care Home Administrators to lead high-quality long-term care services throughout Bermuda. Delivered in partnership with Bermuda College (PACE Programme), the Health Council of Bermuda, and Age Concern Bermuda, the programme is modelled after the nationally recognized Administrator-in-Training framework developed by the National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) in the United States.
Programme Components
The 12-month programme combines classroom instruction, practical leadership experience, mentorship, and competency assessment.
Participants complete:
Weekly classroom instruction
Competency-based assignments and assessments
Guided preceptor mentorship
Supervised practicum experience
Capstone project
National competency examination preparation
(Optional) Overseas learning experience
NAB Core Competency Areas
Training is organized around four nationally recognized long-term care leadership domains:
Care, Services & Supports - Resident-centered care; Nursing and clinical services oversight; Quality improvement; Resident rights and safety; Dietary and nutrition services; Admissions and care planning
Environment & Quality - Infection prevention and control; Housekeeping and laundry operations; Emergency preparedness; Environmental safety; Regulatory compliance; Risk management
Leadership & Strategy - Leadership development; Strategic planning; Governance and ethics; Communication and stakeholder engagement; Organizational culture; Change management
Business Operations - Human resource management; Financial management and budgeting; policies and procedures; Performance management; Resource allocation; Operational efficiency
Coursework
Participants receive instruction from experienced healthcare, regulatory, management, and long-term care professionals. Coursework combines lectures, case studies, practical exercises, group discussion, and applied learning activities designed to strengthen administrative leadership skills.
Preceptor Guidance & Practicum
Each participant is paired with an experienced administrator or approved leadership mentor who serves as a Preceptor throughout the training process.
The practicum component provides supervised, hands-on leadership experience in residential care settings and related healthcare environments. Participants apply classroom learning in real-world situations while receiving coaching, feedback, and performance evaluation from their Preceptor.
Optional Overseas Learning Experience
Participants may elect to participate in an overseas practicum or leadership exchange experience through approved partner organizations. These placements provide exposure to international best practices, innovative care models, and experienced long-term care leaders.
National Examination
Upon successful completion of the programme requirements, participants are prepared to sit a nationally recognized competency-based examination aligned with NAB standards and long-term care administration best practices.

Annual Spaces are limited with priority registration given to administrators currently administrating in a local residential care facility.
